I’m sorry, but this is beyond stupid.
The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.
The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.
This is our government, saving us from ourselves. Forget about the implications for the already struggling family farm, and the basic, foundational questions of government intrusion into private affairs. What our government is doing, yet again, is separating our kids from nature and outdoors-based organizations, like FFA. Government at all levels, particularly at the local level, is obsessed with risk aversion. Have you read “Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv? I strongly recommend you do so.
